He Left the Indian Navy to Save the Planet: Dr. Sravan Kumar Khuntia Is Using Music, Technology and Startups to Fight Climate Change
In a world where climate change is often discussed through scientific reports and international conferences, Dr. Sravan Kumar Khuntia is taking a different approach. A retired Indian Navy Commander, entrepreneur, academic and music artist, he is using the power of music, technology and sustainability-focused startups to make climate awareness more relatable and accessible to everyday people.
His journey from naval aviation operations to climate entrepreneurship reflects a simple but powerful belief: people are more likely to act when they understand not only the facts but also the human impact behind them.
From Aircraft Carriers to Climate Action

Dr. Sravan Kumar Khuntia spent more than two decades serving in the Indian Navy, including working in aviation operations aboard INS Viraat and INS Vikramaditya. With a background that includes education at IIT Madras, an MBA from NMIMS and a PhD in Aerospace, he built his career around discipline, leadership and complex operational challenges.
However, a personal turning point changed his priorities.
While standing on the flight deck of INS Vikramaditya, he noticed an unusual haze across the horizon. Around the same period, a super cyclone affected Odisha, his hometown. These experiences encouraged him to explore climate science, ocean temperature trends and carbon emissions more deeply.
What he discovered convinced him that climate change was a challenge requiring urgent attention and better public communication. He began to question whether scientific information alone could inspire the behavioural changes needed to address the crisis.
Eventually, he made the difficult decision to leave his established naval career and dedicate himself to sustainability, climate communication and entrepreneurship.
Planet Pulse: Making Climate Literacy More Human
One of Dr. Sravan’s key initiatives is Planet Pulse, a climate literacy music brand that uses original songs to communicate environmental issues through emotion and storytelling.
The initiative focuses on subjects such as coral bleaching, melting glaciers, declining river health, disappearing bees and the wider consequences of environmental degradation.
Rather than relying solely on statistics and technical explanations, Planet Pulse aims to help listeners connect with these issues personally. Its storytelling approach moves from grief and anger towards understanding and hope, encouraging audiences to recognise the problem and consider their role in creating change.
With 45 original songs reported in its collection, the platform aims to reach people who may not regularly engage with climate reports or environmental discussions.
Its guiding message, “Jaanega India, toh karega India,” captures the idea that awareness can become the first step towards meaningful action.
Building a Wider Sustainability Ecosystem
Dr. Sravan’s work extends beyond music. Through IDEALERS B2B Pvt Ltd, he is associated with a broader sustainability-focused business ecosystem that includes multiple initiatives.
These include Cleantech Mart, an AI-enabled cleantech marketplace; Carbinnov, which reports planting more than 450,000 mangroves in the Sundarbans; and other technology and sustainability ventures.
Together, these initiatives reflect an approach that connects climate education with practical solutions, clean technology and nature-based environmental projects.
His work has also received recognition through awards including the Prithvi Award, the Indian Achievers’ Award and the TiE Delhi Sustainability Award. He additionally mentors startups through institutions such as DY Patil Innovation Foundation and IIM Sambalpur I-Hub Foundation.
Turning a Personal Mission into Collective Action
Leaving a stable career to pursue an unfamiliar mission brought professional uncertainty and personal challenges. Yet Dr. Sravan’s motivation remains rooted in the future of the planet and the people who will inherit it.
Through Planet Pulse, sustainability ventures and educational initiatives, he wants to reduce the gap between knowing about climate change and genuinely understanding its consequences.
His journey demonstrates how leadership can evolve beyond traditional professional boundaries. It also highlights the potential of creative communication to bring environmental conversations to new audiences.
As climate change continues to demand attention, Dr. Sravan Kumar Khuntia is building a mission around an unconventional combination of music, innovation and entrepreneurship.
For him, the objective is not simply to make people listen to songs about the environment. It is to inspire them to understand the climate crisis, care about its consequences and participate in creating a more sustainable future.
