The Family Adoption Program encourages every MBBS student to adopt multiple families from rural or underserved communities. Instead of relying solely on hospital-based learning, students regularly visit these households to understand their health conditions, family dynamics, living environment, nutrition, sanitation, immunization status, and healthcare needs.
This direct interaction enables students to appreciate the real-life challenges patients face outside clinical settings. It also strengthens preventive healthcare by promoting health education, disease awareness, and early identification of medical concerns within the community.
Research Reveals Significant Educational Benefits
To assess the effectiveness of the Family Adoption Program, Dr. Shamin Eabenson and his research team conducted a cross-sectional study involving 406 medical students. The results revealed overwhelmingly positive perceptions toward the program.
According to the study, 84.5% of students agreed that FAP improved their understanding of patient-family dynamics, while an equal percentage reported significant improvement in communication skills with patients and their families. More than 82% stated that the program increased their empathy, helping them better understand the emotional and social aspects of patient care.
The study also found that 74.1% of participants believed the program provided practical clinical skills applicable to future medical practice, while 76.6% reported greater overall satisfaction with their medical education. Most notably, 85% of students said they would recommend the Family Adoption Program to other medical students, highlighting its educational value.

Traditional medical education primarily focuses on diagnosis and treatment within healthcare institutions. However, many health problems originate from social determinants such as poverty, nutrition, sanitation, education, and access to healthcare services.
Through repeated family visits, medical students learn how these factors directly affect patient outcomes. This experience enhances clinical reasoning while fostering qualities such as compassion, cultural sensitivity, teamwork, leadership, and patient communication.

The study emphasizes that improving infrastructure, faculty engagement, and institutional support will further strengthen the program’s effectiveness and sustainability.
