The spine is one of the most important structures in the human body. It provides support to the body, helps us maintain an upright posture and allows us to bend, twist and move freely. It also protects the spinal cord, which plays a vital role in carrying signals between the brain and the rest of the body. A healthy spine is therefore essential for maintaining mobility, balance and overall quality of life.

However, our modern lifestyle often puts unnecessary stress on the spine. Long hours at a desk, prolonged mobile phone use, inadequate physical activity and incorrect sitting or sleeping positions can gradually affect spinal health. Poor posture may cause muscle strain, stiffness and recurring neck or back discomfort, particularly when these habits are repeated every day.

Common Posture Mistakes We Make

One of the most common mistakes is slouching while sitting. Leaning forward, rounding the shoulders or sitting without adequate back support can increase stress on the neck and lower back.

Another frequent problem is looking down at the phone for long periods. Keeping the head bent forward while texting or scrolling can put additional strain on the neck muscles.

Sitting continuously for several hours is another concern. Even if your sitting posture is reasonably good, remaining in the same position for too long can cause stiffness and muscle fatigue.

Many people also bend from the waist while lifting objects. This can place excessive load on the lower back. Similarly, twisting the body while lifting or carrying something heavy can increase the risk of back strain.

Good Postures for a Healthy Spine

1. Maintain a proper sitting posture

Keep your back supported against the chair, shoulders relaxed and both feet flat on the floor. Keep your computer screen close to eye level so you do not have to constantly bend your neck.

2. Stand with your spine aligned

Keep your head over your shoulders, shoulders relaxed and weight evenly distributed on both feet. Avoid excessive leaning to one side.

3. Follow the correct posture while using your phone

Try to hold your phone closer to eye level instead of continuously bending your neck downward. Take frequent breaks during prolonged screen use.

4. Lift objects safely

Bend your knees and keep the object close to your body while lifting. Use your leg muscles rather than bending from your waist, and avoid twisting while carrying a load.

5. Change positions regularly

Avoid staying in one position for prolonged periods. Stand up, walk around and gently stretch at regular intervals, particularly during long working hours.

6. Pay attention to your sleeping posture

Use a supportive pillow and mattress that allow your neck and spine to remain in a comfortable, neutral position.

A healthy spine is not maintained by one perfect posture alone—it is built through consistent, everyday habits and regular movement. Being mindful of how we sit, stand, sleep, lift and use our devices can help reduce unnecessary strain on the spine.

On this World Spine Day, let us make spinal health a part of our everyday routine. Small changes in posture and movement today can help us protect our spine, stay active and maintain better mobility throughout life.Dr. A.K Dwivedi: Simple Tips for Better Spine Health
