Upskillab Building India’s Future Mental Health Experts

India Built the World’s Biggest Talent Pipeline for Coders — Not for Counsellors. One Noida EdTech Wants to Fix That

India has successfully built some of the world’s largest talent ecosystems for technology, engineering, and finance. Every year, millions of young professionals enter these industries with structured education, training programs, and career pathways. However, there is one crucial area where the country still lacks a strong talent pipeline — mental health support and counselling.

While psychology has become one of the fastest-growing fields among Indian students, the infrastructure required to transform psychology graduates into skilled, practical counsellors has not grown at the same pace. The result is a growing gap between the demand for mental health support and the availability of trained professionals who can provide it effectively.

Today, mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, career uncertainty, and emotional struggles are becoming increasingly common across age groups. However, access to reliable counselling remains a challenge, especially outside major metropolitan cities. A large percentage of trained mental health professionals are concentrated in urban centres, leaving many people in tier-2 and tier-3 cities without easy access to professional support.

This gap is not only about the shortage of counsellors; it is also about the absence of a strong practical training system that prepares future professionals for real-world counselling situations.

Upskillab, a Noida-based education and mental health skill development platform, was created to address this exact challenge — building a generation of counsellors who are not only academically qualified but also practically prepared, empathetic, and confident enough to support people in need.

The idea behind Upskillab came from observing a pattern that was impossible to ignore. Across India, countless individuals are silently struggling with emotional challenges but often do not know where to seek help. In metropolitan cities, some mental health resources are available, although accessibility remains a challenge. But in smaller cities and towns, finding a trained and approachable counsellor can still be extremely difficult.

The challenge is not that people do not need support. The challenge is that the ecosystem to deliver that support has not been built at scale.

Many psychology graduates complete their academic journey with strong theoretical knowledge but limited exposure to supervised counselling practice. Understanding psychological concepts is important, but effective counselling requires much more — active listening, empathy, crisis management, communication skills, ethical understanding, and the ability to handle real human emotions.

Upskillab focuses on bridging this gap by providing practical, industry-oriented training for psychology aspirants and early-career professionals. The institute aims to equip learners with the skills required to become confident mental health professionals who can make a meaningful difference from day one.

Since its inception, Upskillab has already trained 2700+ counsellors, many of whom have started creating a positive impact in communities by applying their skills in real-world situations.

The journey has not been without challenges. Mental health continues to carry social stigma in many parts of India, where people often hesitate to seek counselling or openly discuss emotional struggles. Building awareness and making mental health conversations more normal remains a significant part of the mission.

Another challenge is creating accessibility beyond large cities. Many tier-2 and tier-3 communities have individuals who are willing to help and contribute but lack the right training, guidance, and professional pathway. Upskillab believes that solving India’s mental health challenges requires not only more professionals but also professionals who are visible, approachable, and connected with the communities they serve.

Over the next few years, Upskillab aims to expand its impact by training thousands of psychology students and early-career professionals in practical, empathy-focused counselling skills. The organisation is also working towards building partnerships with schools, colleges, and NGOs to improve mental health awareness and access, especially in regions where the need is greatest.

The long-term vision is to create one of India’s most trusted empathy-skills certifications for psychology professionals — a practical benchmark that represents real counselling readiness and professional capability.

At its core, Upskillab’s mission goes beyond creating more counsellors. It aims to make mental health awareness and emotional well-being a natural part of everyday life — something people understand and access before reaching a crisis point.

Just as society values physical health check-ups and medical awareness, mental health support should become equally familiar and accessible. By developing skilled professionals and spreading awareness, Upskillab is working towards a future where seeking mental health support is not unusual or intimidating, but simply a normal part of a healthier society.

“Choosing psychology as a profession will always be an individual choice, and it should remain that way. However, psychoeducation is different. It should not be optional. It needs to be a part of everyone’s life, just like basic literacy or basic health awareness.”
